Cochran Leverages Early Start For Day 2 Lead At Bassmaster Open On Pickwick
COUNCE, Tenn. — Lonnie Cochran of Section, Ala., spent all day on his spot, but only needed the first two hours to sack up a Day 2 limit of 25 pounds, 3 ounces to take the lead at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Pickwick Lake.

Adding the tournament’s heaviest bag to his Day 1 limit of 18-10, Cochran rose from 11th place with a two-day total of 43-13.
After a cloudy, rainy opening round, Day 2 brought bright sunny conditions. However, Cochran credits his productivity improvement to timing — specifically, an earlier boat number.
“I didn’t get on my fish until 1 o’clock yesterday and I was able to get there early this morning,” Cochran said. “Once I got to my spot, I Power-Poled down and I never moved. I had a limit by 7:30; it was pretty fast and furious.
“I quit fishing about 8:30, but I didn’t move. I threw different baits, just to (guard the spot). I didn’t want to leave when I did, but I had to get in.”
Focusing on a 50-yard stretch of main-river shell bottom in 6 feet of water with scattered milfoil, Cochran said he caught his fish on a mix of reaction baits and slower presentations.
“I have both prespawner and postspawners on this spot,” he said. “They’re trying to group up in one area. They’re going in and out. There’s a little bit of a shad spawn going on at this spot.”
The key to his area’s attraction is proximity to the main river channel and the entrance to a major spawning area.
“You have a creek that runs in close to this spot and the river’s not far,” Cochran said. “It’s kind of the fork of a creek with the river coming by.
“I caught 12-14 fish. It wasn’t huge numbers, but they were all solid fish. I lost a 3 1/2-pounder on my second cast and I was like, ‘Oh lord, here we go.’ Then I changed baits and I didn’t lose any after that.”
Cochran said he relied heavily on his Humminbird 360 to survey his area and spot key fish.
“I was calling my shots,” he said. “The 360 tells you where they’re at all around the boat.”
John Garrett of Union City, Tenn., enjoyed a fast start to his day and added 18-12 to the 21-12 he weighed on Day 1. His 40-8 total keeps him in the second-place spot.
“I had some fish move offshore yesterday and I started fishing offshore this morning and caught about 18 pounds in probably 20 minutes on one of my spots, and then they just quit biting there,” Garrett said. “I went to my secondary spot and caught quite a few 3-pounders, just nothing that helped. I spent the rest of the day looking for new areas.”
Garrett’s main spot was a 16-foot ledge in front of spawning areas. His secondary area was a flat adjacent to where shad have been spawning in the early mornings. Garrett caught all of his fish on a powder blue back chartreuse Strike King 6XD.
Joey Nania of Cropwell, Ala., remained in third place by adding 17-13 to Thursday’s weight of 21-11 for a two-day total of 39-8. While he missed the momentous feeding window that Thursday’s storm created, Nania worked a multipart program that delivered what he needed.
“I was fishing grass and stumps on an offshore spot,” he said. “I had (approximately) 17 pounds at 10-12 o’clock, so I decided to go up in the river and flip a little bit. I caught a 3-pounder, culled one time and got to my 17-13.”
Nania caught his fish on a 3/4-ounce green pumpkin shad ZMan ChatterBait JackHammer, a Carolina rig and a Texas-rigged plastic.
“There are so many patterns going on right now, it just allowed me to be free and go fishing, but the main deal was the grass and the stumps,” Nania said. “I found a few deep schools today, so I’m excited about going fishing tomorrow.”
Nania is in the lead for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award with his 8-2 from Day 1.
Chad Harvey of Cave Creek, Ariz., won the co-angler division with a two-day total of 19-6. On Day 1, Harvey caught a limit of 8-11 and landed in a five-way tie for 19th place. Adding 10-11 Friday allowed him to edge second-place Charles Watts by 10 ounces and claim the top prize of $19,100.
Harvey said a tougher Day 1 required him to use finesse baits, but he was able to fish more aggressively Friday. He caught fish on a white Z-Man ChatterBait JackHammer and a white Norman crankbait, but his better bites came on a 3/8-ounce green pumpkin/purple Pepper Jig with a 4-inch green pumpkin Berkley PowerBait Chigger Craw trailer.
“Yesterday, I only caught the three fish I weighed; but today, I caught 20,” Harvey said. “Today we were targeting rocky offshore bars in 3 to 6 feet of water with grass on the sides.
“This afternoon, they were crushing it. They were grabbing it and swimming with it and (nearly) ripping the rod out of your hand.”
Cory Weaver of Ankeny, Iowa, won the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award among co-anglers with a 6-13.
Cochran leads the Central Open points standings with 200 points. Garrett is in second with 199, followed by Nania with 198, Andy Hribar of Lakeville, Minn., with 197 and Day 1 leader Brent Crow of Hartselle, Ala., with 196.
Jacob Foutz of Charleston, Tenn., leads the Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year overall points standings with 553.
The Top 10 remaining anglers will take off at 6 a.m. CT Saturday from Pickwick Landing State Park. The weigh-in will be held at the park at 2 p.m. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 2 p.m. Coverage of the event will be available at Bassmaster.com.
The Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau is hosting the event.

Adkins Overcomes All Odds To Win B.A.S.S. Nation Southeast Regional On Hartwell
ANDERSON, S.C. — After 30 years of fishing the West Virginia B.A.S.S. Nation, Willie Adkins Jr. will finally get to fish for a national championship.
Adkins caught a limit of bass weighing 10 pounds, 8 ounces Friday on the final day of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeast Regional at Lake Hartwell to secure the victory with a three-day total of 34-13, earning $5,000 and a spot in the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.
“I’ll never ask for anything else. I don’t care if I ever make the Classic, this right here tops everything for me,” Adkins said. “I probably won’t do it again and I’m going to eat it up.”
It was a moment Adkins thought he may never experience — for a number of reasons.
On his way to a tournament three years ago, Adkins was involved in a car accident that broke his left arm. Not only did the car accident leave doctors worried his arm may need amputation, Adkins also discovered he had Stage 4 kidney cancer and surgery was performed to remove one of his kidneys.
“The boy who hit me saved my life. The doctors told me I wouldn’t have lived six months if I hadn’t found out,” Adkins said. “They said I would lose my arm. I went to get a second opinion and the doctor told me he would see what he could do and he fixed it. Now I’m back fishing again.”
When he received the winner’s trophy from Tournament Director Jon Stewart, Adkins hoisted it above his head with both arms, celebrating more than just one victory.
When Adkins arrived at Lake Hartwell, his plan was to fish shallow water, similar to the style he fishes back home in West Virginia. To his delight, he was able to find some spawning activity in those shallow areas.
“I live to fish for bedding fish,” Adkins said. “Anybody who knows me, if I can find them I can catch them because I love to fish that way. I’m going to have a heart attack one of these days on the front of that boat trying to catch a fish off the bed. It is so exciting to see a big fish grab your bait.”
Throughout the week, Adkins targeted the spawners with a craw-imitating bait as well as a lizard. On the second day, he used a spinnerbait to target windy points around the main lake when the wind picked up in the afternoon. Adkins also gave credit to one of his co-anglers, Sam Nowalk, for helping him figure out Lake Hartwell.
After placing third on Day 1 with 13-6 and first on Day 2 with 10-15, Adkins began the final day targeting bedding bass and filled out his limit about three hours into the event throwing a floating worm around docks.
Around 10 a.m., Adkins noticed a group of spotted bass schooling in the middle of the lake and proceeded to make several important culls that improved his Day 3 bag.
“It was unbelievable,” he said. “I looked out in the middle and these big spotted bass started coming up. I ran out there with a big spinnerbait and caught two 3-pound spotted bass.”
With just a few minutes to go, Adkins said he lost a fish that he estimated to be about 3 pounds and thought he lost the tournament.
“But I didn’t need it,” he said.
Adkins has a long scar on the back of his arm from surgeries to put replacement bones in his arm. While the cancer has not yet been beaten, Adkins said he is going to continue to fight the disease as long as he can.
“I’ve still got it. I’m still fighting and it’s not going to get me. I don’t care, I’m not going to give up,” he said. “I’ve fished this B.A.S.S. Nation for years and years and never even came close until this year. That boy saved my life in that car wreck and he gave me this, what else could I ask for?”
After barely making the Top 20 cut on Day 2, North Carolina boater Michael Belter jumped from 19th place to second on the final day with a limit weighing 14-2 to improve his three-day total to 33-12, earning himself a spot in the Nation Championship.
After failing to key in on any herring spawn during practice, Belter said he decided to fish for largemouth during the event.
“I didn’t even get my limit the first day,” Belter said. “I only had four fish because I was focused on catching largemouth. I was getting a lot fewer bites that way. But, this isn’t a points tournament and you have to catch as much as you possibly can, and I thought that would take largemouth.”
He did, however, start each day by fishing a buzzbait around a shad spawn he found along some riprap bank. From there, he moved to shallower pockets with docks.
On the final day, Belter filled his limit around 9:30 a.m. fishing a Dave’s Tournament Tackle HD Swim Jig under boat docks. Later in the day, he caught several fish off a bed that helped him cull his smaller fish.
“When I went to the docks Day 1, I couldn’t catch any on a swim jig. I got some fish to swipe at it, but couldn’t catch any,” he said. “Yesterday, I got a couple to swipe at it and then I could throw a Senko and catch them. Today, the first one I went to I caught a fat, little 12-incher and then I caught the big one. From there, I caught four more keepers.”
With a Day 3 bag of 11-11, South Carolina native Bryan Gunter finished third with 33-4, punching his ticket to the championship after boat issues almost derailed his day.
Gunter rotated through multiple topwater walking baits trying to capitalize on the herring bite on shallow points. On Day 1, Gunter caught five bass and only seven on Day 2, filling out his limit in the last hour both days. On the final day, he caught eight total fish, but they had the size to help him pull off a Top 3 finish.
In the process, Gunter traveled approximately 60 miles each day searching for high percentage areas.
“I skipped a lot of points that probably had fish on them, but I stuck with what I thought were high percentage points and what I thought was a high percentage bait,” Gunter said. “The largemouth I caught were postspawn. A lot of the spotted bass I caught were likely postspawn and were waiting for the herring to get there.”
Jody Belcher took home the co-angler victory with a three-day total of 20-2, catching 6-13 on the final day to give the West Virginia Nation team a sweep of the top spots in the tournament. Belcher was emotional after the victory remembering his late father and what he meant to his fishing career.
“This is pretty awesome,” he said. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and it means a lot to me. We’ve got a great team.”
The top finishers on the boater and co-angler side from each state earned a spot in the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship to be held Nov. 3-5 on the Ouachita River in Monroe, La. The winner of that event will qualify for the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk on Lake Hartwell.
This week’s tournament was hosted by Visit Anderson.

Tennessee Tech Pair Targets Largemouth To Take Bassmaster College Series Lead At Cumberland
JAMESTOWN, Ky. — Samuel Vandagriff and Jacob Woods know they have the luxury of choosing which species of bass they want to target during this week’s Carhartt Bassmaster College Series on Lake Cumberland presented by Bass Pro Shops.
But the duo from Tennessee Tech firmly believes that mastering the largemouth bite is key to winning on this massive reservoir that covers more than 65,000 acres in south-central Kentucky.
With the first of two competition days complete, they might be right.
Vandagriff and Woods, 20-year-old agriculture business majors, took the Day 1 lead on Friday with a limit of five largemouth that totaled 17 pounds, 4 ounces. Vandagriff anchored the bag with a 4-13 heavy, and he added a healthy 4-5 largemouth for good measure that gave him and his teammate just enough weight to lead at the halfway point on Cumberland.
In all, 225 tandems from around the U.S. are competing this week in the second of five regular-season College Series events taking place in 2021. The Top 12 tandems will earn cash prizes for their schools and the top 10% of teams (23 total) will qualify for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, to be held later this year at a yet-to-be-disclosed location.
Vandagriff and Woods got an early jump on the rest of the field with their opening limit.
“One of those bigger fish came off a bed and another one I caught on a bank,” Vandagriff said. “There’s a bunch of bedding fish here, but they’re all 2-pounders. So, we’re looking for the right ones.”
Vandagriff said Cumberland fishes a lot like Center Hill Lake, his home water in Tennessee, which put him in a comfort zone on Day 1.
“We caught a decent limit of about 13 pounds early and then just fished around,” he said. “Slowly but surely, we were able to add weight. Practice was pretty tough, so I’m thrilled with 17 pounds. And we’ll try to do the same thing tomorrow — go catch a small limit and then hope to add some bigger ones. We’ll have to have at least 17 or 18 (pounds) again if we’re thinking about winning this thing.”
The sun shined brightly on a cloudless Friday, with temperatures hovering in the mid-70s most of the afternoon. It was a welcome change for the anglers, following steady storms that soaked the Bluegrass State a day earlier, and many anglers took advantage of steady (but manageable) winds to zigzag across Cumberland searching for the variety of largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass that swim here.
Chase Carey and Dylan Akins of Emmanuel College (Ga.) are just behind the leaders with 16-14. Brothers Carson and Jake Maddux of Auburn University are third with 16-9 and Dalton Smith and Cade Hayford of Campbellsville (Ky.) University are fourth with 15-12. Jack Dice of Liberty University in Virginia is fishing solo, but that didn’t keep him from charging into fifth place with 15-10.
Each of the Top 10 teams in the Day 1 standings caught limits as 51 of the 225 boats weighed the maximum number of fish.
Dice caught the big bass of the day, a 5-2 largemouth that put him in the lead for a $500 Carhartt gift certificate. Woods and Vandagriff have the early lead for the $250 Bass Pro Shops gift certificate that goes to the duo with the heaviest bag of the week.
The near picture-perfect weather that slipped into the area Friday could be disrupted overnight. A frost warning is in effect for Russell County early Saturday, with temps expected to plunge into the 30s before warming again into the 70s by Saturday afternoon.
The 2021 College Series began on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell in March and was headed to Alabama’s Smith Lake earlier this month before high water postponed that tournament until May 14-15. College anglers head to Michigan’s Saginaw Bay on June 16-17, and a wildcard tournament is scheduled for Alabama’s Lay Lake June 23-24 leading up to the National Championship.
Anglers will take to Cumberland again at 6 a.m. CT for the second and final day of the tournament, with weigh-in set to begin at 2 p.m. Both takeoff and weigh-in will be held at Halcomb’s Landing in the shadow of the Wolf Creek Dam.
Anglers from the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Series presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, as well as the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster Junior Series, will compete in one-day tournaments Sunday on Lake Cumberland.
The tournament is being hosted by the Russell County Chamber of Commerce and State Dock on Lake Cumberland.

Walters and Cappo Collect Yamaha Power Pay
Quitman, Texas – Patrick Walters and Quentin Cappo both fished a strong tournament during the record-setting Bassmaster® Elite Series on legendary Lake Fork. While their performances fell short of hometown favorite Lee Livesay’s mind-boggling 42-pound limit on Championship Sunday, they both went home with Yamaha Power Pay bonus money.
Walters and Cappo also chimed in backstage during the weigh-in about why they choose Yamaha power during competition.
“One word. Reliability,” said Walters. “Every time I turn the key, I know my Yamaha is going to get me where I need to be with zero issues.”
Cappo agreed. “Reliability and dependability are what I love most about my outboard. If I can see it on the map, I know my Yamaha can get me there to fish it.”
Explosive topwater strikes were also central to the two anglers’ success on Lake Fork. Walters caught a 9-pounder the final day on a topwater. Cappo says topwater is what he loves to do best, so as long as Lake Fork’s numerous giants were crushing it, he kept throwing it.
In the end, it was a great week in East Texas for both Yamaha pros. But you don’t have to be one of the world’s best topwater anglers or a touring pro to cash-in on Yamaha’s Power Pay contingency money, and you don’t have to win tournaments to take home Power Pay cash.
Anglers simply have to be the highest finishing registered participant in a Power Pay-supported tournament. Power Pay is not just for bass anglers – it also includes eligible saltwater, walleye, high school and college anglers (over the age of 18) through hundreds of events.
Introduced in the fall of 2019, Power Pay gives anglers the opportunity to receive compensation for running eligible Yamaha outboards. Eligible anglers running Yamaha outboards can sign up for the program by visiting yamahapowerpay.com. All applicants are required to accept and adhere to the Yamaha Angler Code of Ethics before completing the registration for the program. Once registered, the highest placing angler in specified Power Pay sanctioned tournaments that meets all eligibility requirements will be compensated by Yamaha accordingly.
New tournaments for 2021 include the MLF Bass Pro Tour, Bass Champs Texas, Carolina Bass Challenge, Texas Team Trail®, Skeeter XFL, Nichols Team Series Oklahoma, Phoenix BFL Regionals, EFL Redfish Contender Series and EFL
Redfish Tour. Additional eligible Power Pay tournaments and trails include the Bassmaster Classic®, Bassmaster® Angler of the Year, Bassmaster Opens, B.A.S.S. Nation®, Bassmaster Elites, Bassmaster College Series, Bassmaster High School series, A.B.A. Bass Pro Shops® Open Series, Alabama Bass Trail, MWC, The National Walleye Tour®, AIM® Walleye, Kingfish Cup and Flatsmasters®.
