John Cox is no stranger to making bass fishing headlines. Whether he’s winning tournaments, testing out head turning hair-dos, entering every professional bass fishing tournament known to man, or cashing another $3,000 of Toyota Bonus Bucks, Cox is always appearing in the news.
Cox’s marathon 2021 season is comprised of twenty-two Tour level tournaments. That includes the full Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour, the MLFBig5 Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit, and the Bassmaster Elite Series calendar of events. He is the only angler taking on that kind of schedule this year.
“The more tournaments the better as far as I’m concerned,” Cox laughed. “I have a couple conflicts but will only have to miss two events. I’ll have lots of time on the water and plenty of chances to earn Bonus Bucks!”
The easy going Florida pro purchased a 2021 Tundra before the start of the season after his 2016 aged out of the popular program at the end of last year. Cox handed down his 2016 truck to his 18-year old son the day he drove his new tow vehicle off the lot.
“Man I like a lot of things about these trucks but the towing power has to be top of the list,” Cox said. “I love how a Tundra pulls and it’s hard to beat the reliability. Whether it’s me pulling a big Crestliner across the country or my 18-year-old needing a daily driver, I’m confident trusting a Toyota.”
Cox was one of many Elite Series pros vocal about an extremely tough practice and genuinely feared he would not catch a keeper on day one of the Tennessee River Elite. At 10:00 AM Cox was sitting on empty livewells when an area he knew of thanks to a past tournament win by the late Glenn Browne came to mind.
The area he referred to as “Glenn’s creek” proved fruitful and he was able to milk enough shallow water largemouth out of the spot to remain squarely inside the top 10 all week.
“It was really special having Glenn’s creek save my tournament like it did,” Cox said with a smile thinking about his old friend. “I didn’t catch a single fish in there during practice. Heck, I didn’t catch many fish at all in practice. Glenn’s creek and David Fritts making a sweet crankbait and cranking system saved my butt for sure.”
A #5 Berkley Frittside Crankbait paired with a 7-foot 6-inch medium heavy Abu Garcia Veritas Winch Crankbait rod accounted for every single bass Cox caught en route to a 3rd place finish.
Whether you compete in team tournaments on the weekends when you have time, or you fish in every tournament possible like John Cox you can earn Bonus Bucks. As long as you tow your boat with a 2017 or newer Toyota tow vehicle you are eligible for the program.
