MONTICELLO, Ind. (June 24, 2014) – The Wabash Valley High School team of Elijah Hamrick and Griffen Fernandes brought a five-bass limit to the scale Sunday weighing 10 pounds, 4 ounces to win the 2014 Indiana State High School Fishing Championship on Lake Shafer. The win earned the team the title of state champions and qualified the team to compete in a High School Fishing conference championship on Lake Erie in September.
The top 10 teams on Lake Shafer were:
1st: Wabash Valley High School – Elijah Hamrick and Griffen Fernandes, five bass, 10-4
2nd: Columbus East High School – Chase Banister and John Weddle, five bass, 8-15
3rd: Wabash Valley High School – Shawn Zellers and Beau Ashcraft, five bass, 8-5
4th: Winemac High School – Greg Zellers and Blake Albertson, five bass, 8-4
5th: Union High School – Austin Tinsman and Evan Patterson, four bass, 7-12
6th: Indiana Student Angler Federation – Garrett Clady and Grant Clady, three bass, 4-6
7th: Charlestown High School – Tyler Olson and Brett Olson, two bass, 4-5
8th: Region Wrestling Academy – Ian Dembowski and Daylan Schurg, two bass, 3-14
9th: McCutcheon High School – Billy Swank and Karson Peacock, one bass, 2-11
10th: Western High School – Dustin Hinkle and Cory Hinkle, one bass, 1-13
The 2014 Indiana State High School Fishing Championship was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 9-12. The top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field will advance to a High School Fishing conference championship along with the top 3 teams from each of the six 2014 High School Fishing Opens that coincide with the 2014 Walmart FLW Tour. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will then advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2015. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all SAF members nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest high school bass tournament, the 2014 High School Fishing World Finals, held on Lake Dardanelle in Russelville, Ark., on July 15-19.
