GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (April 7) — After beginning the 2015 Bassmaster Elite Series season with a runner-up finish, Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler Mike McClelland is looking to end this weekend’s Diet Mountain Dew Bassmaster Elite event at Lake Guntersville one spot higher. “There’s no doubt that momentum and confidence are huge,” McClelland said. “The thing about this place is that it’s at a completely different end of the spectrum from where we were a couple of weeks ago. We knew the Sabine River was going to be challenging to catch keepers, but this lake may have more fish in it than any other lake in the middle part of the United States right now. “The challenge here is going to be catching big ones. A lot of times, at this time of the year especially, it’s more about covering water and catching the big ones as they come. There’s no doubt there’s going to be a ton of fish caught and everybody is probably going to catch them. It’s one of those deals where you hope for a couple of good bites.” McClelland will try to cover as much water as he can and snag those few big fish that will put him securely at the top of the leaderboard when he launches at 6:15 a.m. CT and returns for weigh-in at 3:15 p.m. at Guntersville City Harbor. “Essentially this is the time of the year when the fish really start scattering,” McClelland said. “Early on the fish are kind of grouped up, but now is when they start to scatter and really get into their spawning mode. It’s one of those deals where you have to put yourself in areas where you know they are at and cover a lot of water. “Very seldom in this time of year do you come up on one specific spot and really bag them up. It’s more about putting your head down and catching them as you can catch them and hope for a big one or two along the way.”
