This week we’ll talk about fishing heavy cover and when I like to use a flippin’ jig vs a punch rig. My jig of choice is 3/4 to 1 1/4 Strike King Hack Attack jig with a Rage craw or Menace trailer. For punching I like a 3/4 to 1 1/4 Strike King tungsten weight, 5/0 Hack Attack flippin’ hook, punch skirt, and a Rage craw trailer.
1. Application- if I’m having to work my bait on the bottom underneath the heavy cover I find that a jig works best in that situation. When the fish are suspended under the cover that is when the punch rig really shines.
2. Modifications- trim the skirt about 1/4 inch below the hook and I also trim 3/8 of an inch from the head of the rage craw. Doing this will help prevent short strikes.
3. Recommended Tackle- 60 lb Seaguar Kanzen. Keith Combs Signature Series flippin’/punching rod. Shimano Metanium.
Hope this tip helps you catch a few more bass.
