Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Angler David Walker Makes Cut

WADDINGTON, N.Y. (July 31) — Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler David Walker put together two good days of fishing to make the cut at the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite event on the St. Lawrence River. His two-day total of 32 pounds, 15 ounces puts him 32nd out of 107 anglers and has him well inside the top-50 cut spot.

“I’m very happy I made the cut,” Walker said. “It’s been a long week. It was a tough practice and an ever tougher event, honestly. I wasn’t catching a lot of fish, but I managed to catch the right ones. I guess I’ll go out there and do it again tomorrow.”

Walker brought in 17 pounds, 3 ounces on Thursday and then landed five fish weighing 15 pounds, 12 ounces Friday to make the cut.

“It’s nice because it takes the pressure off,” Walker said. “Tomorrow, I’ll just go catch what I catch and not stress over points and the Classic and all that stuff. It does make it a much more fun daytomorrow.”

Walker did move into a tie for 33rd in the Toyota Angler of the Year standings, which helps set the field for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic. Making the cut helps him in the standings because he’ll have a chance to move up even higher on Saturday.

The top 12 after Saturday’s fishing will compete for the championship trophy on Sunday. Walker is a little less than 5 pounds out of the top 12, but he knows moving up that high will be difficult.

“Anything’s possible but it won’t be easy,” Walker said. “I’m fishing for a better position and a better check tomorrow.”

The St. Lawrence River separates the United States and Canada, and the weather has been warm this week.

“The weather’s been awesome,” Walker said. “The locals think it’s too hot, but it’s not. We had a good finish and we’ve got a good chance to do a little bit better tomorrow. Overall, it’s been a success.”

Fellow Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat angler Mike McClelland will finish 71st with a two-day total of 27 pounds, 13 ounces. He had 15-5 after the first day and 12-8 on Friday.

David Walker’s two-day total of 32 pounds, 15 ounces puts him 32nd out of 107 anglers and has him well inside the top-50 cut spot.
