GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (April 11) — By making an impressive late charge this weekend, Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat angler Mike McClelland recorded a top-50 Bassmaster Elite Series finish Saturday on Lake Guntersville. Culling his way to a five-fish 14-pound, 15-ounce bag Saturday, McClelland’s three-day total weight of 50 pounds, 12 ounces was good enough for a 39th-place overall finish. “It was definitely the toughest day we had seen at Lake Guntersville since we got here,” McClelland said. “Even considering practice, the conditions were as unfavorable as they could have been if you weren’t fishing select areas, and I think a lot of us faced that today. “The wind blew a lot harder than it was supposed to. It was probably blowing 10 to 18 mph today straight out of the north, and it really messed a lot of the areas that we were fishing. “I actually caught more fish today than I had caught all week throughout the course of the day, but I never got any big bites. And I think when you look at the leaderboard, there were still a fair amount of 20-pound bags but the catches weren’t quite as impressive as what they had been this week.” Despite finding himself much further down the leaderboard than he would have liked after the first day of competition, McClelland is satisfied with the hard-fought display he put in to work his way up to a top-40 finish. “Essentially I feel ecstatic in the way this event turned out after how it went the first day,” McClelland said. “Would I have loved to have gone out and caught another 23-pound bag today and continue to fish tomorrow? Yeah, of course I would have. “When you have a setback like I had the first day, you don’t perform and you don’t catch them when 95 other guys did, it really kind of puts your down. To come back like I did yesterday and then to gain a couple of more positions today, I had a pretty successful week if you look at the way it started.”
