Confidence has McClelland Poised for Success on Cayuga Lake

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. (Aug. 19) — As the Bassmaster Elite Series continues on its Northern swing, pro angler Mike McClelland feels right at home for the Aug. 21-24 tournament at Cayuga Lake in Union Springs, N.Y.

While the Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler calls Bella Vista, Ark., home, Cayuga Lake is a body of water on which McClelland feels confident. After dealing with the curveball that the Delaware River threw at him during the previous event, McClelland knows this is his best chance to rebound with what he knows best.

“Well this is definitely going to be a much different event than what we had the week before in Philadelphia,” McClelland said. “There’s going to be an opportunity here to catch both largemouth and smallmouth bass, and it should be a fairly good week with much better fishing for all the anglers as a whole.

“This lake should set up really well to the way I like to fish,” McClelland said. “It’s got a lot of shallow areas to fish with vegetation and boat docks. Usually when I find myself on a lake like this, I pick and choose a couple different places that should produce good results for me and stay there for the majority of the time.”

With a plan already intact, McClelland will launch from Frontenac Park at 6:15 a.m. ET with the rest of the Elite Series anglers in hopes of snagging a big bag consistently for weigh-in at 3:15 p.m.

“There is definitely going to be some big bags brought in from here,” McClelland said. “We should see most bags in the upper teens to low-20 pounds this week. However, not everyone is going to be able to catch that kind of weight. Once you catch five, the goal is definitely going to be to keep going and continue to cull. It’s not going to be you catch five and then start running around looking for new stuff to fish. You’re going to stick with what you’ve been working with and try to cull up as much as you can.

“One thing about these Northern lakes, they are full of fish but you generally have to go through a few to get to a weight you want to reach.”
