J. Lee: Points Title Perspective

As the 2021 Bass Pro Tour season comes to an end this week on Lake St Clair, so will Jordan Lee’s reign as the Bass Pro Tour Points Champion. Lee’s incredible 2020 season, which included four Championship Round appearances over the course of six Stages, will live on in the history books and the Points Title Trophy will always proudly sit in his trophy case.

But Lee isn’t the kind of competitor to be content with past achievements. J Lee will be the first to tell you he’s not happy with his on the water performance in 2021. While he currently sits in 33rd place in the point standings, in good position to qualify for next year’s REDCREST, Lee is not satisfied.

“Last year really was a dream year,” Lee said. “Winning two major events and coming out on top with the Points Title against this group of anglers was absolutely incredible. It was like every decision I made seemed to be the right one, and when I did slip up I would make an adjustment and catch a key fish or get some kind of clue.

“Then this year it’s felt like I’ve always been just a little behind the eight-ball. Instead of catching that key fish, my line would break or the fish would jump off. I missed three different Knockout Rounds by one or two scoreable bass this season. It really is humbling when you sit back and think about it. The BPT format takes no prisoners.”

The ebbs and flows of momentum in professional bass fishing really is an interesting case study. Every year an angler or two will get on a run where it seems they can do no wrong when it comes to on the water decision making. On the flip side, even the best anglers in the world ride the struggle bus when things aren’t clicking.

Realistically, some of the best anglers in the world would gladly swap their year and current points standing with J. Lee in the blink of an eye. Jordan isn’t having a bad year by any stretch of the imagination, but he isn’t having the kind of season he’s come to expect from himself. At 30 years young, Lee’s career has been nothing short of greatness.

The Carhartt pro has been collecting trophies, accolades, and the attention of the bass fishing community since his college fishing days. If his 2021 efforts are what struggling looks like for Jordan Lee, the Alabama native has little to worry about.

“I’m not going to sit here and wine and say I’ve had a terrible year,” Lee said with a smile. “After having some tough tournaments and bad breaks, I’m thankful to be where I am at. I’m still in a good position to make REDCREST and Heavy Hitters and all things considered I’m a lucky dude. It could most definitely be a lot worse.”

That’s some solid perspective from a fierce competitor who is still young in his career, and who happens to be one of the greatest talents professional bass fishing has ever seen.

Lee has his sights set on clinching a spot in the 2022 REDCREST and Heavy Hitters event, and knows he needs to have a good finish in Carparts.com Stage Seven to do so.

It’s not in Lee’s nature to stress or over-analyze, but he’ll head out to Lake St Clair with the same competitive fire that burned one year ago when he set out on Sturgeon Bay with the goal of locking up his first Points Title Championship.

“I’d rather be near the top of the Points Standings duking it out with Ott and Wheeler, but I’m going to have to fish just as hard to sneak into REDCREST,” Lee admitted. “The goal might be a little bit different but the job is still largely the same. I’m going to go out there, keep my head down and leave it all on the water. All you can do is all you can do.”

Tennessee’s Michael Neal Leads First Day at MLF Bass Pro Tour Stage Seven at Lake St. Clair

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (Sept. 10, 2021) – Pro “The Real Deal” Michael Neal of Dayton, Tennessee, caught 36 bass totaling 120 pounds, 13 ounces, to grab the early lead for Group A on Day 1 of the CarParts.com Stage Seven at Lake St. Clair Presented by Covercraft Friday in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.

The six-day event, hosted by Macomb County, St. Clair Shores and the Detroit Sports Commission, showcases the 80 top professional bass-fishing anglers on the planet competing for a purse of $805,000, including a top cash prize of $100,000 to the winner. The tournament is livestreamed each day at MajorLeagueFishing.com and the MOTV app and also being filmed for broadcast later this fall on the Discovery Channel.

Neal will bring a 18-pound, 9-ounce, lead into Sunday’s second day of competition for Group A. In second place on the SCORETRACKER® leaderboard is the red-hot Academy Sports + Outdoors pro Jacob Wheeler of Harrison, Tennessee, who caught 39 bass totaling 102-4. B&W Trailer Hitches pro Russ Lane of Prattville, Alabama, sits in third place – 1-ounce behind Wheeler – with 33 bass weighing 102-3. Kalamazoo’s Kevin VanDam caught 13 bass weighing 36-12 and sits in 18th place.

The 40 anglers in Group A will now have the day off on Saturday, while the 39 anglers competing in Group B will begin their first day of competition. Group A will resume competition on Sunday.

“It was a heck of a day. It’ll be interesting to see if I can get back our here on Sunday or not,” Neal said, pondering the weather forecast. “If I can’t, I’m going to have to try to come up with a different plan to try to win the round.”

Neal spent pretty much his entire day fishing the same general area – a spot that he described as a big grass flat with a few irregularities – using multiple different baits and techniques. In Period 1, Neal relied on a drop-shot rig and boated six bass. In Period 2, he mixed a jerkbait into his repertoire and along with the drop-shot added another 10 scorable bass. In Period 3, Neal caught fire with a medium-diving crankbait and another 20 scorable bass in the period.

“Whenever it is calm enough to fish, I’m all in on the area that I fished today,” Neal added. “There are tons of fish there, but I don’t know how long they’ll stay, or if the wind will move them or what. We’ll have to see what happens. Regardless, today has been a really fun day.”

Straight off of his two back-to-back Bass Pro Tour victories, second-place pro Jacob Wheeler maintained his historic pace and had another great day on the water Friday.

“It was another incredible day,” Wheeler said. “I stayed on them all day long. It was great to have another 100-pound day, but we’ve still got a lot of work left ahead of us. It’s a solid start, though. And I’ve got a chance to win the round, and that’s really all that you can ask for after Day 1.”

The top 20 pros in Group A after Day 1 on Lake St. Clair are:

1st: Michael Neal, Dayton, Tenn., 36 bass, 120-13
2nd: Jacob Wheeler, Harrison, Tenn., 39 bass, 102-4

Ish Monroe won the Berkley Big Bass Award and earned $1,000 Friday for weighing a 5-pound, 13-ounce largemouth bass on a frog during Period 3. Berkley awards $1,000 to the angler who weighs the heaviest bass each day, and a $3,000 bonus to the angler who weighs the heaviest bass of the tournament.

The 40 Anglers in Group A compete in their two-day qualifying round on Lake St. Clair on Friday and Sunday – the 40 anglers in Group B on Saturday and Monday. After each two-day qualifying round is complete, the anglers that finish in 2nd through 20th place from both groups advance to Tuesday’s Knockout Round, while the winner of each group advances directly to Wednesday’s Championship Round. In the Knockout Round, weights are zeroed and the remaining 38 anglers compete to finish in the top 8 to advance to the Championship Round. In the final day Championship Round, weights are zeroed and the highest one-day total wins the top prize of $100,000.

Anglers will take off from the 9-Mile Ramp, located in St. Clair Shores, at 8 a.m. ET each day of competition. With strong winds being forecast for Saturday, Bass Pro Tour Tournament Director Aaron Beshears has decided to allow tournament competitors to trailer their boats. Anglers must remain at the 9-Mile Boat Ramp until 8 a.m. and then will be allowed to depart to the desired launch ramp of their choosing.

The General Tire Takeout ceremonies will also be held at the Launch Ramp, beginning at 5 p.m. each day. Fans are welcome to attend all takeoff and takeout ceremonies and also encouraged to follow the event online throughout the day on the MLF NOW!® live stream and SCORETRACKER® coverage at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

As part of the event fans will also be treated to the Bass, Brews & BBQ Festival at Blossom Heath Park in St. Clair Shores, from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Gallant Takes Over Lead In Bassmaster Open At 1000 Islands

CLAYTON, N.Y. — Cooper Gallant’s Day 2 limit of 25 pounds, 2 ounces was right about where his practice results indicated he’d be, but an unexpected Day 1 bonus positioned him to take the Day 2 lead of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands.

Cooper Gallant, of Bowmanville, Canada, is leading after Day 2 of the 2021 Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands with a two-day total of 52 pounds, 2 ounces.  Photo by Andy Crawford/B.A.S.S

Placing second on Day 1 with 27 pounds — 7 ounces behind first-round leader Cal Climpson — Gallant said he was surprised at that weight because he came into the tournament targeting the 25-pound mark. Topping the field with a two-day total of 52-2, the Bowmanville, Canada, pro enters Championship Saturday with a 1 1/2-pound lead over Bassmaster Elite angler Cory Johnston, who sits in second with 50-10.

“I had a pretty good bag today, but I didn’t see any of the big, big, big ones like those 6-pounders you’d like to have,” Gallant said. “If you can catch five 5s, you’ll be sitting pretty good.

“I ended up culling about four times and I had about 10 fish all day. I’m not getting many bites, but they’re the right ones.”

Gallant spent his day in Lake Ontario, not far from the mouth of the river. There he fished a drop shot with an unnamed bait over rocky bottom with isolated boulders on the Canadian side.

“The bigger fish are getting on the noticeably bigger boulders and then you also have big ones cruising the whole flat,” Gallant said. “I found when it’s calm and the sun’s out, they get on the boulders really good.

“From what I’ve seen, when the wind’s blowing, they’ve been pulling off of them. You just have to drift and find them. I think they feel protected sitting on those boulders.”

After Thursday’s huge catch, Gallant commented that he was concerned he had caught most of his spot’s potential.

“I knew there was still fish around there, but I didn’t know if I could catch five,” he said. “I thought I could catch one or two but I ended up camping out all day on what I fished yesterday.

“Tomorrow I’m going to switch it up. I pounded that area pretty good the last two days and we’re going to gamble and hopefully come in with another 25 pounds.”

Two months ago, Johnston finished fourth in the Farmers Insurance Bassmaster Elite event on the St. Lawrence. This week, the Canadian pro has been consistent with daily limits of 25-7 and 25-3.

“I ran similar stuff as I did yesterday; I started in the river and worked my way out to the lake and caught fish all day,” Johnston said. “I worked little subtleties in the (rock structure) in about 40 feet and caught them on a drop shot with a prototype Spro worm.

“The fish are definitely moving (with the cooling weather). They’ll probably be gone tomorrow and I’ll have to find new fish.”

Climpson slipped to third with 49-14. After starting with the event’s heaviest bag — 27-7 — the Cavan, Canada angler added 22-7. Day 2, he said, required much more of a search effort.

“I had to run quite a bit of spots,” Climpson said. “Today, it wasn’t so much that the fish left; I just lost a few key fish. I didn’t relocate today, I just kept running a couple of the spots where I’d found them in practice and I just ran into them. I only fished two new spots that I didn’t fish yesterday.”

Targeting rocky bottom and boulders in 20-30 feet, Climpson again caught his fish on a drop shot with a 3/4-ounce weight. On Thursday, he rotated through three different baits. Today, he had to increase his selection to five.

“They’re getting picky for sure,” Climpson said. “I probably dropped down on a dozen fish that wouldn’t bite today.”

Andrew Upshaw of Hemphill, Texas, leads the Phoenix Boats Big Bass standings with a 6-13.

Zack Eggleston of Goleta, Calif., highlighted his summer visit with Upstate New York relatives by winning the co-angler division with 33-6. After placing third on Day 1 with 15-2, he added an eye-popping 3-fish limit of 18-4.

Eggleston caught one of his keepers on a drop shot with a 4-inch Big Hammer Baits Salt Shaker worm and a 3/8-ounce weight, but most of his fish ate his homemade 3/32-ounce black hair jig. Eggleston added a piece of stick worm to the jig’s hook shank to bulk up the body.

“I think they like the hair jig because it’s very subtle in the water; it’s not intrusive,” he said. “They’ll follow it but then they’ll come up and eat it. It’s something you can swim and cover water with. There are so many little bugs that get washed around down there; it’s just like candy to them that they can’t pass up.”

Eggleston tied Mathew Mccarthy of Marysville, Ohio, for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers. Both caught fish weighing 6-12.

Jonathan Kelley of Old Forge, Pa., leads the Northern Open points standings with 554. Mike Iaconelli of Pitts Grove, N.J., is in second with 549, followed by Alex Redwine of Blue Ash, Ohio who is tied for second with 549, J.T. Thompkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., is in fourth with 520 and Gallant is in fifth with 515.

Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., leads the overall Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year points standings with 1,029.

Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. ET at the Antique Boat Museum. The weigh-in will be held at the museum at 2:30 p.m.

Live coverage of the event can be streamed on Bassmaster.com and the FOX Sports digital platforms. FS1 will also broadcast live with the tournament leaders from 8-11 a.m.

1000 Islands Clayton Chamber of Commerce and the Antique Boat Museum are hosting the event.

Immaculate Mobile Tackle Management

Cypress, CA (September 9, 2021) – Anyone who attended school in the last half century has owned a Trapper Keeper, or at least seen overstuffed ones clutched and carried down the corridors. They were, and still are, the valedictorian of school supply organizers. Keep that in mind while welcoming Daiwa’s new D-VEC Tackle Binder, the Trapper Keeper of fishing.

For years, these go-anywhere totes were referred to as “worm bags,” anglers stuffing them with plastics of all stripes. Since then, use has evolved to storage and quick access to everything from sinkers and hooks to jigs and even hardbaits. Troubles with run-of-the-mill worm bags abound, however. The inner sleeves fail, outer fabric doesn’t hold up and a spray of water can turn everything into a junkpile of rust.

Daiwa’s new D-VEC Tackle Binder beats back those weaknesses…and more.

Geared for both freshwater and saltwater use, the D-VEC Tackle Binder is constructed of marine reinforced vinyl, not the typical vulnerable fabric. The hardy vinyl is water resistant, too, not soaking up moisture, which is the catalyst for rusting baits. The exterior also features double nylon zippers that open all the way around the bottom and up both side for easy access. You’ll appreciate the zipper quality, too.

No doubt, the outer construction is brilliant, but the magic really happens on the inside. Both the Medium and Large D-VEC Tackle Binder contain five zippered sleeves secured with double rings that stay closed, only opening when you want them to. These aren’t ordinary sleeves, either. Unlike the classic Ziploc style, D-VEC Tackle Binder sleeves are constructed of transparent, pliable and tough Isinglass. It’s the same robust and flexible material used in marine windows and windshields. To that, the tops are zippered, not shoddily sealed like a sandwich bag. Such seals wear out fast. They also trap air, wasting precious space by ballooning up. Breathing D-VEC Tackle Binder sleeves maximize the amount of space available for baits and tackle. The final internal accoutrement you’ll appreciate are two open pouches for managing fishing tools.

The Large D-VEC Tackle Binder measures 13” X 11” X 3” and has an MSRP of $29.99. The Medium D-VEC Tackle Binder measures 11” X 9” X 1” and has MSRP of $24.99.

Freshwater or Saltwater, Daiwa’s D-VEC Tackle Binder is the most complete bait tote you’ll ever use.

Climpson Takes Lead In Bassmaster Northern Open At 1000 Islands

CLAYTON, N.Y. — Fall’s seasonal transition took a big chunk out of Cal Climpson’s practice findings, but the Canadian pro located enough quality to assemble a limit catch of 27 pounds, 7 ounces to lead Day 1 of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands.

Cal Climpson, of Cavan, Canada, is leading after Day 1 of the 2021 Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands with 27 pounds, 7 ounces.

The recent arrival of cooler weather and big winds have cracked the whip on large schools of smallmouth that had been lounging in deep water. With schools fragmenting and scattered fish starting to push shallower, consistency has become challenging.

“I had quite a bit of fish located in practice, but a lot of my spots were dry today, so I had to work really hard to get that weight,” Climpson said. “I wish I knew where they moved to. The fish that I caught were ones that stuck around in the same depths as they were in practice.

“This is classic September; the fish are in all depths right now. The water temperature has dropped 7 to 8 degrees in the last week and a half, and the fish are not as grouped up as they were in August.”

Knowing that Lake Ontario has historically produced a higher quality of fish than the St. Lawrence — river fish burn more calories in the higher current — Climpson began his day in the big water.

“I snuck out into the lake, but then it started getting rough, so I ended up in the river around noon,” Climpson said. “What I caught was about fifty-fifty between the lake and the river.”

For his Lake Ontario work, Climpson ran about 7 miles out and targeted an area of rock and transition bottom (rock to gravel) in 25 to 35 feet. Noting that large, isolated boulders were the key spots, Climpson said his Garmin LiveScope played a key role in his success.

“I’d be casting around until I saw one and then I’d start targeting it,” he said. “I was able to catch a couple of fish that I saw on LiveScope.

“When it was calmer this morning, I was using the trolling motor to try and cover some water, but once the wind picked up, I just let it (propel my drift).”

Climpson said he found that the fish were on the move, even within the spot he fished. To counter this, he made measured drifts that worked progressively across the hard bottom. Drifts that yielded a catch earned a follow-up pass.

Back in the St. Lawrence River, Climpson caught fish with a similar game plan.

Anchoring his bag with the 6-9 he caught in the lake, Climpson said he tried a variety of baits, but caught all of his fish on a drop shot. While keeping his bait particulars guarded, Climpson said he used a 3/4-ounce weight to keep his drop shot on target in rough water.

“I actually caught fish on three different drop-shot baits,” Climpson said. “I just rotated through the baits if I didn’t get bit.”

Cooper Gallant of Bowmanville, Canada, is in second place with 27-0. Committing his day to Lake Ontario, Gallant fished a long point using a drop shot to target several key areas in depths of 7 to 30 feet.

“I had (most of) my weight by 10 and then I upgraded once around 1 o’clock,” Gallant said. “Then I just went looking the rest of the day.

“I knew I was on a 25-pound bag in practice and I knew 27 was possible. Honestly, today I thought I had 25. I didn’t even weigh them. I just like to throw them in the livewell and surprise myself at the end of the day.”

Gary Adkins of Green Bay, Wis., is in third place with 25-10. Spending his day in the lake, Atkins said that carefully controlling his drift speed for natural presentations was essential to his success. He also benefited from a change in conditions.

“I caught my biggest fish — a 5-7 — around 1 o’clock,” Adkins said. “Actually, once the wind picked back up, the bite got better because of more current. I’m on a structure that needs current and when that current blows up on there, the fish move up to feed.”

Sharing the third-place spot is Kevin Park of Waymart, Pa.

Climpson, Brock Belik of Orchard, Neb., and Chris Hellebuyck of Waterford, Mich., share the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors. Each angler caught a 6-9 smallmouth.

Sakae Ushio of Tonawanda, N.Y., leads the co-angler division with 15-3. Matthew Mccarthy of Marysville, Ohio, holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 6-12.

Jonathan Kelley of Old Forge, Pa., leads the Bassmaster Northern Open standings with 551 points. Alex Redwine of Blue Ash, Ohio, is second with 545, followed by Spike Stoker of Cisco, Texas, with 533, Michael Iaconelli of Pitts Grove, N.J., with 527 and Hugh Cosculluela of Spring, Texas, with 522.

Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., leads the overall Falcons Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year standings with 977 points.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. ET at the Antique Boat Museum. The weigh-in will be held back at the museum at 2:30 p.m. Coverage of the event will be available at Bassmaster.com.

1000 Islands Clayton Chamber of Commerce and the Antique Boat Museum are hosting the event.
